Name Tag

The humble name tag is one of those items that we often don’t think about and yet is remarkably commonly used in all sorts of different areas for a number of reasons. Most people when thinking of a name tag automatically think of the sticky labels variety, but this is only one of many. Sticky label name tags are the ones that come as a sheet of labels usually coloured white and each label peels off the sheet individually so that it can be stuck onto the blouse or shirt of someone. This type of name tag is often seen at parties, community groups and other meetings where the name of each person is written on a label and worn for the duration of the meeting. The main advantages of adhesive label name tags is that they are both convenient and inexpensive. This type of tag can be bought in most newsagencies or variety stores and costs relatively little for anything from twenty five to a hundred sheets of labels. Each sheet can then have from ten to twenty labels on it depending on the size of the label. The low cost of these name tags makes them especially useful for meeting organisers who have a tight budget that they must keep to. In addition, these label tags are particularly useful in situations where a meeting has been called at the last moment and name tags must be purchased quickly and conveniently. Although this type of name tag is usually coloured white, it is possible to buy them in a range of colours and patterns and even with character designs already printed on them. The main disadvantage with this type of name tag is that it doesn’t appear particularly professional and so is not generally used for business or corporate meetings and expos. Another disadvantage is that the names on the tags are not always easily read if the person writing out the name has singularly bad writing.

Adhesive Label Name Tags

The next step up from adhesive label name tags are name tags that are made from a piece of card and slip into a plastic badge holders. The name tag holder in this case is made from a plastic sleeve with an opening at the top to allow the card to easily slide in. The tag holder itself has some form of clasp on the back so that it can be attached to the tunic or shirt of the wearer. The clasp can take the form of a safety pin or an alligator clip or even a combination of these. The card in this case is usually similar to a business card in thickness and will usually have the name of the wearer printed on the card for a more professional look. Again both the plastic name tag holder and the cards themselves can be bought from most newsagencies and variety stores allowing them to be conveniently bought if needed on short notice, but when used at expos or in business meetings, they are generally bought in bulk from stationary suppliers to reduce the price. One of the main advantages of these name tags is that they provide a more professional look allowing them to be used in more professional surroundings whilst still being relatively inexpensive. Another advantage is that the plastic name tag holders can be reused if the meeting is being held by a company, business or some other entity that can ask for the name tags to be returned at the end of the meeting. This means that the name tag holders only need to be bought once with only the couple of holders that aren’t returned needing to be replaced for the next meeting. In fact if the same people will be attending each meeting, the cards themselves can remain in the holders and the entire name tag given out at each meeting. This saves on the card having to be printed with the persons name for every meeting. The cards can also be printed with themes and designs rather than just having them be plain white. This can often be done on a home inkjet printer in the case of small scale meetings but for large corporate meetings the cards are often printed in bulk at a professional offset printer. The main disadvantage with this name tag is that while it is more permanent than adhesive labels, it’s still not as permanent as plastic or metal name tags and so is not very useful as a name tag on a day to day basis. They also do not present a professional enough appearance when it comes to company representatives dealing with the public in situations that include sales representatives, secretaries and service staff.

Plastic Name Tag

The next type of name tag includes plastic name tags. These must be ordered from a supplier that specifically sells this type of tag because the writing on the tag must be either printed, embossed or engraved in or on the plastic. These name tags are satisfactory for most professional sales requirements and can be seen used by department store, clothing store and other shop sales staff. The main advantage is that they are more permanent and so only one needs to be bought by the company for each sales staff member. They are also far more professional looking. The disadvantage is that they cost more with the price ranging from a dollar to ten dollars per name tag, depending on the quantity bought and whether they are customized. Most companies that buy these plastic tags will get them customised by having the company logo printed on them. This provides the added advantage of promoting and advertising the company whenever the badge is worn by an employee outside the company workplace. Anyone who looks at the badge will instantly see what company the employee works for.

Retractable Name Tag Badge Holders

Although the above plastic name tags are suitable for many staffing needs there is one situation where this type of name tag is simply not convenient. An example of this situation is in a corporation where there is often a certain level of security involved. This usually requires all employees to use identification name tags to enter different areas of the building or offices including the building itself where the business is located. Using the name tag usually involves swiping the tag through a card reader that picks up the information located on the magnetic strip of the identification name badge. If someone is using a standard plastic name tag as described above, they would have to remove the tag to be able to swipe it. This can become extremely annoying and inconvenient. The other alternative is to buy a retractable badge holder to hold the tag. These are constructed with a retractable reel around which is wound a cord. The name tag is attached to the end of the cord via a bulldog clip and can be pulled away from the body to swipe it through a reader and then automatically retracts back towards the reel once it is released. This is far more convenient than traditional name tags.

Metal Name Tags

There are some people who simply are not satisfied with having a run of the mill plastic name tag and feel that if they are going to wear a name tag, it needs to be a little more pronounced, durable, weightier and more expensive looking. The perfect solution for this requirement are metal name tags. This type of name tag looks far more impressive and can either manufactured with the persons details set into the metal or embossed in the metal after its been made. These name tags come in copper, aluminium and bronze and are obviously more expensive than those mentioned previously and so are not generally used for regular staff members, but more for higher management. If you wish to go a step higher than this, then magnetic name tags could just be the thing for you. Magnetic name tags have a magnet attached to the name tag that is placed on the outside of the shirt, suit or dress with a second magnet placed inside the clothing to keep the name tag in place. The beauty of these is that they do not require pins and therefore leave your clothes undamaged.

Pet Name Tags

An article on name tags just isn’t complete without a mention of pets. Pets are one of the bigger populations of name tag wearers. Pet name tags are used predominantly for dogs and cats although name tags for just about any animal can be bought. The main purpose of these is to show the pets name and owner’s details in case the pet goes astray.
